Young people rewarded for hard work

-

MEMBERS of Gwynedd Council’s Youth Service supported a community project run by a group of young people in the village of Abererch near Pwllheli.

The initiative by the Youth Service aims to help local young people (aged between 11 and 19) improve their environment and boost their personal development towards the world of employment.

As part of their duties, council staff provide sessions to give opportunities for young people to improve their personal, social and educational skills.

One of those involved in the project was youth worker Carys Lyn Jones, who said: “The Abererch group had outdoor activities in mind to begin with, with members agreeing on games to be played in the park and on the beach.

“It came to their attention, however, how much litter there was in those locations and so they decided to undertake a sponsored litter pick to clean their beach and village.

“As a service we listen to the individuals’ voices and try to help them with health and wellbeing, work skills, and as in this case, enable them to make a contribution in their community. It’s a pleasure working with the group in Abererch – they are enthusiastic and very proud of their community.”

This campaign by the youngsters has also received the support of local Gwynedd Councillor Peter Read, who as a token of appreciation provided them with tickets to go for a day of activities in Hafan y Môr Holiday Park.
