Golfers clinch county champs
LADIES’ golf has been hitting the headlines recently and not just in Scotland where Europe were battling it out against the USA at Gleneagles for the Solheim Cup.
At Royal Porthcawl in South Wales, the ladies of the Caernarfonshire and Anglesey County Golf Association competed against the County of Glamorgan ladies in the Welsh County Finals, and just as in Scotland, it couldn’t have been closer.
In the morning foursomes, Jeanette Williams, of Royal St David’s, and Jane Hallows, of Llandudno Maesdu, won their match by a whisker, while veteran pair Ann Lewis, of Royal St David’s and Pip Settle (Porthmadog) had an easier win, giving the North Wales team the lead by a margin of one point.
But it was neck and neck in the afternoon. Ann Lewis and Pip Settle once again proved their dominance in singles matchplay but the young Glamorgan squad made the most of their local knowledge and inflicted some crushing defeats on the visitors. In the end Grainne Pendlebury (Abersoch) hung on to win on the 18th, giving Caernarfonshire and Anglesey the overall victory by five points to four.
“Glamorgan played some fantastic golf,” said county captain Dot Hambley, of Holyhead).
“But in the end it all came down to the last putt of the last match, just like in the Solheim Cup – and it felt just as good!”
The victory capped off a very good weekend all round for North Wales county golf as Caernarfonshire were successful in the Welsh Inter Counties Tournament which took place at Bull Bay.
