POLICE RENEW APPEAL OVER ‘AGGRESSIVE’ JET SKI RIDERS

- Amelia Shaw

POLICE are appealing for more evidence against “aggressive” jet ski riders who repeatedly drove their craft at paddleboarders and kayakers off the North Wales coast.

Dramatic footage of the incident on August Bank Holiday Monday was uploaded to social media with people calling for the culprits to be arrested.

The video shows how John Cowtan and his 16-year-old nephew James were paddling off Criccieth when jet ski riders intentionally splashed them over and over again with their wake.

The “deliberate attack” was witnessed by his wife and five-year-old daughter who were enjoying an afternoon on the beach.

Following the incident, Mr Cowtan said that their kayak was “filled with water” and said he was convinced that the three jet skiers were intentionally trying to capsize them.

The 42-year-old says his nephew was “shaken up” after what happened and said the incident should be dealt with in the same way as it would be if “you were in a car and started doing wheel spins around someone”.

North Wales Police described the way in which the jet skiers targeted the kayakers as being “aggressive”.

Those thought to be involved were breathalysed and drug swiped by police officers when they came ashore at Criccieth and Black Rock Sands near Porthmadog.

North Wales Police confirmed that they had launched an investigation last month and they have now said that the suspects have been formally identified.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: “Enquiries are ongoing, the suspects have been identified and anyone with clear video footage clearly showing ID numbers on jet skis should contact us on 101.”
