Housing vision for former nightspot

QUAYSIDE TOWNHOUSES ‘TO ATTRACT YOUNG FAMILIES’

- Owen Hughes

PLANS have been submitted to demolish a nightclub and replace it with new homes.

Venu opened in Pwllheli in 2015 but then closed in the summer of 2018, before briefly reopening under new ownership and shutting again in February.

It has remained shut since then and now an application has been submitted to Gwynedd council to knock the building down.

James Lloyd Developers wants to replace the club and restaurant with a row of eight two-storey town houses along the quayside.

Architects Dobson Owen wrote in a planning statement: “The site has been used as retail outlet in the past.

“The current use is for leisure use, and this has also been unsuccessful, and is now closed permanently, despite a highquality facility being within the current building.

“Thus both retail and leisure use on this site have proven to be surplus to requirement and there is clear evidence that the current leisure use has ceased to be financially viable.

“No other suitable retail or leisure use can be established, or the site would have been use so, despite genuine attempts to market the facility for these uses.”

They added: “A small estate of new housing on the site is designed to be more inkeeping with the traditional development forms of the town and the size and type of dwellings to be provided it is hoped will be attractive to young families which will serve to strengthen the community generally.”

The application will now be considered by planners at Gwynedd council.
