Dog rescued after three day search on mountain
POINTER CROSS FOUND COLD AND HUNGRY AFTER SLIPPING HARNESS ON CADER IDRIS
ADOG that slipped from its harness while walking on a Snowdonia mountain has been found safe after a major three-day search.
Members of the public and mountain rescue volunteers carried out widespread searches for Betsy, a pointer cross, who went missing near the summit of Cader Idris on Saturday.
After three days on the unforgiving peak, she was found cold and hungry, but otherwise unharmed.
Now, Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team has released a video of the moment they rescued the dog, and spoken of how the search took place.
They said that after Betsy slipped from her harness and ran away on the summit plateau of Cader Idris on Saturday afternoon, her owners searched for her, but could not trace her.
They said: “A significant number of friends, family and well-wishers headed back up the mountain on Sunday, in some fairly challenging weather conditions, to continue the search, but to no avail.
“Late on Monday afternoon, a searcher reported hearing what he thought was a dog whimpering in an area of steep craggy ground to the north east of Llyn Cau.
“This was an area he thought he might have heard a dog barking on Sunday, and had returned the following day to investigate.
“With a specific target to explore, the owners requested mountain rescue assistance.”
The mountain rescue team decided to assist with the search, partly to ensure that those looking for Betsy remained safe on the peak.
As the search took place, one of Betsy’s owners located her, but was unable to reach her, so the mountain rescue crew moved in to help.
The spokesman added: “Team volunteers were able to move quickly into position and rigged a simple rope system to access the dog, who was cold and hungry but otherwise in surprisingly good condition given her three nights out in some appalling weather.”
