SURGING RGC ‘ON EDGE OF BEING REALLY GOOD SIDE’ SAYS COACH AS THEY GO 3RD

-

RGC MERTHYR 42 19

RGC head coach Ceri Jones insists his side are close to becoming contenders after their comfortable 42-19 success over Merthyr.

The North Walians are now third in the Premiership table, two points off leaders Carmarthen Quins.

They scored six tries at

Parc Eirias with wing Zak Clow crossing for a hat-trick.

“I like the way we play the game,” said Jones. “You look at the way Harlequins play the game, my old club, it’s a really exciting game to watch.

“If we can stick to the process and keep moving forward with it, then you suddenly become a very dangerous side. We are on the edge of becoming a really good side.

“But I think we can learn from a few of the other sides in this league who put the pressure back on to the opposition because we probably invite some pressure on to ourselves at times.”

After a scrappy opening, the hosts claimed the first try when accurate handling from the inside backs put Clow into space. The wing stepped his way past three defenders before touching down.

Clow was soon celebrating his second try after tremendous pace to run in from 50 metres.

But Merthyr began to grind their way back into the game, and Rhys Davies powered his way over for their first try.

RGC hit straight back as Matt Buchanan collected a charged-down kick to score.

But just when the hosts looked to be pulling away, Merthyr scored two quick tries to level the scores, with Tom Daley and Paddy Mcbride touching down.

A drop-goal and two penalties from Dion Jones edged RGC back into the lead before Buchanan claimed his second try.

RGC were now in total control, and an excellent finish from Clow in the corner secured his hat-trick. RGC claimed their fifth try when Sam Earl-Jones hit a fine angle to score.
