‘He’s a horrible and disgusting thing, he’s not a human... I had to stand up and face evil’

MAN WHO WAS SEXUALLY ABUSED BY MONSTER AS A CHILD SPEAKS OUT TO HELP OTHER VICTIMS

- Andrew Nuttall

AMAN who was sexually abused as a child is urging other victims to speak out and report what happened to them.

He suffered abuse at the hands of Kelvin Gwynedd Evans in the late 1970s, when Evans was 16 and his victim was aged just 10.

The man read an article in November 2018 about other sex offences committed by Evans, and he felt compelled to come forward and report the traumatic childhood abuse he’d suffered.

Speaking to our sister paper, the Daily Post he said: “I was terrified to read this as, despite it not being allowed to be disclosed, I knew exactly who he had abused that time around.

“People are quick to criticise the media, but it was a great thing really that it was publicly reported, as it gave me the strength to come forward.”

The man then endured a “horrendous” wait for justice, having reported the matter “not long after” seeing Evans’ face in the Daily Post.

He said that Evans had forced him to perform a sexual act with a girl when they were both very young, as the teenage Evans watched. The victim also said that Evans performed sexual acts with him following a game of hide and seek.

Reflecting on these “horrific” incidents, he said: “It was quite terrifying as a 10-yearold to go through that.

“We had been groomed over a period of years in order to give him our trust. It was one of the hardest things I had to comprehend during counselling.”

Evans, of Bryncir in Garndolbenmaen, appeared at Mold Crown Court on February 8 and admitted two charges of indecency with a child before a trial could begin.

The 60-year-old was told to sign on as a

sex offender for the next five years as well as comply with a one-year community rehabilitation order and a residence condition for six months.

His victim said: “He’s a horrible and disgusting thing – I’m not even going to say human being.

“When he pleaded guilty, and admitted in a court of law what he did to me, it just brought home the gravity of what I’d been holding onto all these years.”

The victim said the judge praised him for facing his abuser in court to deliver his “powerful” victim impact statement.

“He wasn’t going to rob me of that by confessing,” he said. “In that 10 minutes, that was my chance to tell him face to face what he put me through.”

The man said the 1970s were a “shocking period in our history” when it came to the “rife” sexual abuse across the UK.

He said he chose to speak to the Daily Post in order to encourage others to “have strength” in seeing their abusers face justice.

“These sorts of people cause so much harm and misery in communities and need to be identified for what they have done,” he said.

“I have no shame in my story. The shame is, and should be, all on him.

“I was prepared to stand up and face evil – and I’m so glad I did that.”

He said that, at the time of his abuse, there was “nobody to turn to” for support and “frightened and vulnerable” children would often go unheard.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales for the year ending in March 2021 showed that the police recorded 148,114 sexual offences, encompassing rape (55,696 cases) and sexual assault, and also sexual activity with children.

DC Jo Evans of the North Wales Police Amethyst team added: “We welcome the resolution to this case.

“Whilst the incidents occurred over 40 years ago, we are fully aware of the long term trauma such incidents cause and we will always thoroughly investigate such offences to ensure the complainants are able to move on with their lives.”
