DOCTOR’S NOTE

Exercising for just half an hour a week could cut your risk of dying early by a fifth, research shows.

Scientists analysed 16 studies which tracked participants of all ages for up to 25 years. The results showed that 30 to 60 minutes of lifting weights, push-ups, squats and even “heavy gardening” every week keeps us alive longer.

When combined with weekly exercise, mortality risk fell up to 40%. The exercises also cut the risk of death from conditions like heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Study author Dr Haruki Momma, of Tohoku University in Japan, said: “The combination of muscle strengthening and aerobic activities may provide a greater benefit.”
