ASK DIARMUID
QI purchased a poinsettia in a pot in November 2020 from Marks & Spencer thinking it would only last for Christmas, maybe New Year. However, I still have it looking good even now!
Every few days I water it and take off the old leaves, but then baby red leaves appear.
Can this plant go outdoors? I can’t just throw it away as it’s not dead yet. It’s been in my conservatory for nearly 18 months now, and I think I need to have a different plant to look at. What would you do? Helen Auger, by email
AI think you’ve had great value from your poinsettia if you are still getting some enjoyment from it at this stage!
It is possible to keep them going but the real trick is stimulating the red bracts around Christmas time and it requires expert manipulation of light levels.
Originally from Mexico, this plant is tender and can only go outdoors during the summer. It sounds as if your plant is alive and well so no need to throw it out but it also may be time to treat yourself to something new as you are definitely green fingered!
