Man to face trial next year over death of father

A MAN accused of murdering his father is to be tried next year.

Tony Thomas, 45, denies the offence against well-known businessma­n Dafydd Thomas.

A judge at Caernarfon Crown Court heard that the trial is likely to last at least three weeks. He fixed a date of Monday, January 9, 2023 for it to start at Mold Crown Court.

At yesterday’s preliminar­y hearing the defendant, of Minffordd, Penrhyndeu­draeth, appeared via video link from custody.

He listened as the prosecutio­n and defence barristers held legal discussion­s about the case. Prosecutor Elwen Evans said there was a possibilit­y that the trial might run slightly longer than three weeks.

Judge His Honour Rhys Rowlands set the date for the trial and ordered that the defendant continue to be remanded in custody until January.

Thomas is accused of the murder of his father Dafydd Thomas, a 65-year-old grandfathe­r and well-known businessma­n, on March 25, 2021.

The court heard that he may wish to give his evidence in Welsh, with a simultaneo­us translatio­n, when the trial starts.
