RGC fightback falls short in disappointing season finale

-

ABERAVON made up for losing the Indigo Premiership Cup final by beating RGC 30-21 at the weekend.

The Wizards did all the damage in the first half at Parc Eirias when they led 30-7, but failed to score after the break.

Wales U20 fly-half Dan Edwards kicked 15 points as he landed three penalties – one from inside his own half – and converted all three tries.

Scrum-half Iwan Temblett, wing Coris Lewis-Jenkins and centre Chay Smith tocuhed down for the visitors and the only reply from the home side came in the shape of an Afon Bagshaw try that Dion Jones improved.

RGC fought back after the interval to score two tries.

Aberavon lost No. 8 Andrew Waite and Smith to yellow cards and conceded tries to Dafydd Williams and Owain Evans.

Sam Rogers made the try for Williams with a fine looping pass and then went on to add two more conversions, but the interval deficit was too big to make up.

Head Coach Ceri Jones told the club website: “Credit to Aberavon who came off the back of a cup loss to show intent and were physical which we didn’t deal. We gave them the ball to easily as well, with knock ons and kicks.

“If we are 10% off in this league then you make it difficult to win, and we gave ourselves too much to do in that 2nd half.

“Credit to the boys that came on and made an impact, Cam Davies, Ellis Evans, Owain Evans getting on the scoresheet and Dafydd Williams scoring on his debut.

“I told the players if this leaves a bitter taste in the mouth then it reminds us we need to train hard over the summer and come back harder. If we want to be in the mix at the top of the table then we need to deal with that physically and not be overpowered”
