Bypass closures for three nights of checks

-

THE A487 Caernarfon to Bontnewydd bypass will be closed for three nights for inspections.

The closures were to begin last night (Tuesday) from 10pm, with reopening scheduled for 5am.

Overnight closures will next take place tonight and Thursday night, ending at 5am on Friday. A tweet by Traffic Wales said: “#A487 Caernarfon to Bontnewydd bypass. Road closed in both directions between Goat roundabout and Cibyn roundabout for structures Acceptance Inspections.”

They confirmed that vehicles will be diverted via the A487 route through Dinas, Bontnewydd and Caernarfon. The 9.7km bypass was opened in February, following a short 24 hours delay due to Storm Eunice. To mark the completion of the £139 million project, the Welsh Government released drone footage showing the road in its entirety.

Delivered by the Balfour Beatty Jones Bros Joint Venture, construction of the bypass began in 2019 with work continuing throughout the Covid-19 pandemic with safeguards in place to protect the workforce.

17 major structures were built as part of the scheme and 99% of the excavated materials were recycled and reused on the bypass.

The project also includes improved active travel routes for walking and cycling in the area.

Following its opening, Jon Muff, Project Lead at Balfour Beatty Jones Bros, said: “We are very grateful to the team for their hard work and dedication throughout the project, bringing together the skills and expertise across our joint venture to connect communities in Caernarfon and Bontnewydd whilst significantly reducing traffic congestion and improving journey times.”
