Mobile signal boost is now planned for Eryri beauty spot

-

A BEAUTY spot in the shadow of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is set for a mobile network upgrade in an application from the Home Office.

The Home Office is investing in the Emergency Services Network (ESN) to provide a mobile signal across the UK to key organisations.

This has led to new radio sites in the most remote areas to provide locations from which the ESN signal can be transmitted. It includes a location close to Llyn Gwynant Campsite in Eryri (Snowdonia).

But all mobile phone users could benefit under plans to share the mast with private providers under the Shared Rural Network scheme. This sees shared sites developed that can be used by EE, O2, Three and Vodafone networks. They are designed to remove dead zones for mobile signals.

At this site it would mean a five metre extension to the existing 20 metre mast as well as the relocation and addition of antennas and dishes. An application for this is now in with planners at Eryri National Park.

The Home Office say any negatives of extending the mast are outweighed by the benefits of an improved mobile network in the area.

A planning statement with the application states: “The proposed upgrade is in the public interest as it will connect rural communities, enabling social and economic interaction, enhanced education, and supports wellbeing, including addressing issues such as social isolation and exclusion.

“The proposal has followed national and local planning policy and best practice guidance in the siting and design of its apparatus at an existing location, negating the need for an additional new structure thereby avoiding proliferation of masts in the immediate and wider area. The public benefit generated by the provision of the Shared Rural Network rollout in this area is significant and outweighs any potential or perceived harm caused by the visual impact of the upgraded solution.”
