Airlift for man taken ill near summit
A MAN in his mid-50s was airlifted from near the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) after suffering from severe chest pains and a suspected heart attack.
The incident happened near the top of the Ranger Path. Thankfully Mark Glaister, an experienced mountain biker and first-aider, was on hand to help out as well as calling 999.
The Llanberis Mountain Rescue team were on the scene almost immediately during the incident on Monday.
Mark is originally from St Asaph but now lives in the Peak District where he runs mountain biking adventure company MTB&B.
He said: “Myself and my wife started off in Llanberis, went up the Llanberis path and we decided to come down the Snowdon Ranger path - we just started to come down off the summit and we saw a man waving his arms.”
Mark continued: “We got closer to him - he didn’t look great and replied that he wasn’t well and that he thought he was having a heart attack.
“We are both outdoor first aid trained and it turned out that the man himself was a mountain leader.
“He wasn’t really with it and he was in and out of consciousness - it was very cold, around minus five degrees so we wrapped him up warm and called 999. Mountain rescue arrived within six or seven minutes of making the call - they were amazing.”
“It was surreal really and quite lucky that we are trained and that the Mountain Rescue responded so quickly.
“The gentleman didn’t go to Liverpool as we expected but went to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, thankfully he was eventually ok.”
Llanberis Mountain Rescue have been approached for comment.
