Road blocked off after ‘rubbish left by campervan owners’

- Harri Evans

A BARRIER has been erected to prevent campervans from parking overnight on a popular walking route in an Eryri village.

The secluded country lane behind the Royal Victoria Hotel in Llanberis has long been one of the village’s worst-kept secrets.

It’s a popular route among locals and visitors as it leads up to

Dolbadarn Castle, which overlooks Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris.

But in recent years, heaps of rubbish, including human waste, have had to be cleared from the route on a regular basis.

The mess has largely been caused by campervans that often park on the road overnight, according to local councillor Kim Jones.

People have also been known to pitch tents on the road overnight before leaving piles of rubbish behind them.

The land is owned by the Royal Victoria Hotel which has now placed a barrier on the road to prevent access to vehicles.

From now on, the route will be open to pedestrians only unless access is requested by an authority.

Cllr Jones hopes the road will no longer be a problem area for rubbish as a result.

She said: “There have been longstanding issues with people parking their campervans and setting up tents on the road overnight and leaving heaps of rubbish behind them.

“People have also been fly-tipping on the road and there have been occasions where human waste has been left behind as well.

“Luckily, we have a group of volunteer litter pickers who go around the village but this has been a problem area for some time.

“The route is popular with dogwalkers and people use it to walk to the castle as well.

“Naturally, having rubbish everywhere ruins it for everyone so we’re grateful that the Fic has agreed to put up the barrier.

“Hopefully we’ll see a lot less rubbish on the road as a result.”
