MUM THANKS COMMUNITY FOR FOR SUPPORT

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of Caernarfon teenager Joshua Lloyd Roberts.

The 19-year-old was tragically killed in a road collision that devastated his local community.

The man was arrested on Friday morning on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has now been released on bail pending further enquiries.

North Wales Police (NWP) said no further action is being taken against a 19-year-old man who was arrested and released under investigation earlier last week.

Police inquiries are ongoing and officers remain keen to secure dash cam footage of the incident.

On Thursday evening, hundreds of people gathered to remember Joshua as his mum thanked the community for the support they had provided to the family.

The student, of Uxbridge Square, Caernarfon, was killed in a suspected hit and run on Friday, June 2, on Ffordd Waunfawr.

The death of the Cardiff Metropolitan University undergraduate and gifted footballer has rocked Caernarfon.

But locals have rallied around his devastated loved ones. On Thursday evening, a special memorial and fundraising football match was held at Cae Stanley, the home ground of Josh’s former team CPD Bontnewydd, who took on a Caernarfon Town XI.

It was part of a wider GoFundMe, organised by CPD Bontnewydd which has so far amassed more than £13,000 - a collection was also held during the game.

A minute’s silence was held before the kick off at 6:30pm with wreaths and flowers from both sides placed on the centre circle.

More than 600 people turned out to show their support for Josh’s family, who also attended the match.

Prior to the game, Josh’s mother, Melanie Tookey, said in an interview that the support the family has received from the community has been a “tonic”. Melanie described Josh as a “funny, caring, focussed and positive” young man, telling BBC’s Cymru Fyw: “He never really sulked with anything, he’d just carry on with things. He was just so sweet.

“It’s been hard thinking that we’ll never see him again but with all the messages and tributes and donations, that has helped us through this ugly and unexpected period - it’s helped us through so we can think of Josh, even the smaller things and the nuisance things as well as all the kind things he did.

“Without the support we’ve had on social media, it would have been much harder - it’s been a tonic, I can’t believe how the community has come together over Josh’s life, it’s amazing. To know that there are so many people who Josh touched in his life, to write so many nice things about him and great things about his football and donating to help us has been great. Josh would’ve been touched by it all and I can’t explain how much it means to me and to us as a family, it’s overwhelming.”

There has been a massive outpouring of support from the local community since Joshua’s tragic passing. Floral tributes have been laid at the scene of the crash on Ffordd Waunfawr in Caeathro with the roadside now also adorned with flags, scarves, shirts and other tokens of his favourite teams Cymru, Caernarfon, Everton and Bontnewydd - along with heartfelt messages and photographs of him with his loved ones.

Police were alerted at 11:06pm on Friday night that a man had been discovered on the A4085 heading into Caeathro.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, North Wales Police said.

An inquest into the death was opened and adjourned by a coroner in Caernarfon.

Kate Sutherland, senior coroner for North West Wales, told the hearing in Caetrnarfon that police had received a call from a member of the public to say a man had been found lying in the road. The coroner said: “He was sadly pronounced deceased at the location.”

She ordered a post mortem examination to be carried out which was done by a Home Office pathologist.

The provisional cause of death was given as “severe head injuries”, the inquest heard.

The coroner adjourned the hearing pending the result of the ongoing North Wales Police investigation.
