Activists daub paint on Trinity chapel wall

A GROUP of pro-Palestinian activists threw paint at a Cambridge college last Thursday night (April 25).

Red paint was splashed on the wall of Trinity College chapel and a slogan reading “divest from genocide” was painted on the wall.

It follows another protest in March by Palestine Action which saw a protester damage a 1914 painting of Lord Balfour at the college. Lord Balfour was linked to the creation of Israel.

A spokesperson for This Is Not A Drill, the group which carried out the action, said it was intended “to highlight the college’s complicity in the ongoing genocide of Palestinians through its investment in companies that supply the Israeli occupation with weapons and military equipment”.

They claimed the college had divested from fossil fuels but not from arms companies.

A Freedom of Information request by Middle East Eye found that Trinity College has £61,735 invested in Elbit Systems, an Israeli-based arms company.

It found the college also has millions of pounds invested in companies that produce weapons or machinery used by the Israeli military.

The spokesperson for This Is Not A Drill added: “This action follows demands made by activist and student groups for the college and the university to divest from these corporations and to end their complicity in genocide.”

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said the force was called at 1.30am to Trinity Street to reports of three men causing criminal damage.

They said an investigation has begun and no arrests have yet been made.

They added: “Anyone with info should contact us on 101 or webchat quoting 35/29184/24.”

A Trinity College spokesperson said: “Trinity College condemns this act of vandalism and is co-operating with the police.”
