STAFF at a nursery and infant school in Ely said they are ‘delighted’ after being rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted in a report published on Thursday, May 2.

Spring Meadow Infant School was inspected on March 6 and 7 of this year, with inspectors finding that pupils enjoy attending the school.

The school was previously rated as ‘requires improvement’ after an inspection in 2020.

The 2020 inspection report found that curriculum subjects were not sufficiently developed, that writing skills needed improvement and that SEND pupils were not achieving as well as they should.

In 2020, the school had 250 pupils aged four to seven. It now has 137 pupils in the same age range.

The latest report rated the school as ‘good’ in all areas and found that pupils are “making good progress in core areas such as reading and mathematics”. It said: “The curriculum they learn has been carefully planned, so they build their knowledge over time.”

Pupils were also found to behave well, meaning disruptions to learning were rare.

The report said: “Pupils are respectful, supportive and tolerant.”

Inspectors noted that the school has extra-curricular activities including a school band as well as sports activities.

Pupils also learn how to ride a bicycle

To improve, the report said the school needs to develop writing across the curriculum.

It added: “Some pupils do not attend well enough, including some disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND.

“These pupils miss out on important learning and do not benefit from the quality of education the school provides.

“The school should continue and develop its work further to improve attendance and punctuality so that these pupils are in school more often and benefit from the good quality of education provided.”

Laura Fielding, head teacher at Spring Meadow Infant School, said: “The school are delighted with the result of the inspection.

“We feel the report fully . reflects the progress our school has made and celebrates the hard work of our staff and children.”
