Campbeltown Courier

A right royal treat for movie fans

-

A SMASH-HIT broadcast of a National Theatre production which won three Tonys and two Olivier awards will be the main attraction at the Victoria Hall cinema this weekend.

In celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, the broadcast of the original sell-out West End production, The Audience, starring Helen Mirren as her Majesty, comes to Campbeltown.

The show, written by Peter Morgan (The Queen) and directed by two-time Tony Awardwinner and Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours), includes an exclusive Q-and-A session with Helen Mirren and the director.

Sunday (June 19), with tickets at £12 adults and £10 concessions.

For 60 years, Queen Elizabeth II has met with each of her 12 prime ministers in a private weekly meeting.

This meeting is known as The Audience. No-one knows what they discuss, not even their spouses. From the old warrior Winston Churchill, to the Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, right up to today’s meetings with the current incumbent David Cameron, the Queen advises her prime ministers on all matters both public and personal.

The weekend’s movies also include Disney’s majestic makeover of The Jungle Book, Meryl Streep as Florence Foster Jenkins, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War; The Angry Birds Movie and nailbiting thriller, Our Kind Of Traitor.

Based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, The Jungle Book sees Mowgli’s adventures taken to new heights in this fabulous movie, with a winning combination of cutting-edge movie making, good old fashioned storytelling and an all-star cast of voices.

Rudyard Kipling’s beloved novel was adapted by Disney into its classic 1967 animation, and now Iron Man filmmaker Jon Favreau gives Kipling’s tale a thrilling makeover.

Mixing live-action performance with cutting-edge CGI, this is a visually spectacular and exciting family tale, with a superb voice cast that includes Scarlett Johansson as snake Kaa and Christopher Walken as orangutan leader King Louie.

The real Florence Foster Jenkins was one of those larger than life characters you just could not make up. Meryl Streep stars in this affectionate biopic as the New York heiress – ‘the worst goddamn singer in the world’ – who was never going to let a lack of talent hold her back.

Captain America returns and this time he has to fight his most formidable opponent so far – Iron Man – in the best Marvel Studios movie yet, Captain America: Civil War.

A superhero-studded blockbuster based on the comic book by Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Kingsman) and directed by the Russo brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), this promises to be darker and more emotional than any Marvel movie yet.

The long-awaited spin off, The Angry Birds Movie promises to get audiences in a flap as the massively popular game hits the silver screen with the help of a star-studded cast of voices, including Peter Dinklage, Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad. Our Kind of Traitor is based on the bestselling 2010 novel by spy story master John le Carré, and will delight all who were glued to BBC One’s recent adaptation of The Night Manager.

An ordinary British couple, Perry and Gail, are on holiday in Morocco when they meet the wealthy and charismatic Dima. They soon find out that Dima is not quite what he seems and is, in fact, a long-time associate of the Russian mafia, who now wants him dead.

Starring Ewan McGregor, Naomie Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Damian Lewis, it promises to have audiences on the edge of their seats.

Further 2016 screening dates are as follows: July 9 and 10, August 13 and 14, September 10 and 11, October 15 and 16, November 19 and 20 and December 10 and 11.
