Tarbert golfers raise money for cancer causes

MEMBERS of Tarbert Golf Club pulled together over two events to raise money for McMillan Cancer nurses and Breast Cancer awareness day.

On Saturday June 4, 14 ladies gathered for the Ladies Captain’s prize and a superb day’s golf was enjoyed by all in attendance.

Janeanne Repple took top honours on the day, with Seona Martin in second place. All the ladies raised £140 for McMillan Cancer nurses in the process.

Mixed foursomes

Last Saturday 18 members gathered for the Breast Cancer Awareness day, played as a mixed foursomes.

All participan­ts wore some form of pink in their attire and in the process raised a superb amount of £348, with a spokespers­on wishing to thank all who took part and donated food and raffle prizes.

Winners on the day with a strong score of 60 were Duncan Johnstone of Torinturk and Fiona Johnstone of Mealdarroc­h. Second place on 65 were Gordon McCaffery and Lady Captain Heather Brownlie.

On Sunday June 12 the ladies got together for their monthly stableford, with Sheena Ferguson taking first prize on 44 points and Heather Brownlie second.

Next Sunday is The Islay Frigate Hotel ladies open, which has a strong field taking part. There are still some slots available and anyone looking to play should call the clubhouse on 01880 820565.

On Monday June 20, Tarbert men Keith McTaggart, Cammy Gibb, Chris Smyth and Donnie Sinclair, who all work for Scottish Salmon, are taking part in the McMillan Longest Day Challenge.

Joined on their crusade by four friends who work for AKVA aquacultur­e group, they will attempt to play 72 holes of golf in one day, with all proceeds going to McMillan Cancer Support.

Early start

An early start awaits at 4.30am when they plan to tee-off at Machrihani­sh Dunes, before heading to Machrihani­sh, Carradale and finally Tarbert.

A spokespers­on said: ‘The boys would appreciate any financial donations along the way or via their just giving pages. They also wish to thank the clubs for their assistance and for donating free use of the courses.’
