Cabers crash again at Southend Highland Games
THE ONLY evening Highland games in Scotland is back on track after its year’s holiday in 2015.
Southend Highland Games is the only event in the country which takes place in the evening and the stage is set for Saturday July 23.
At the southern tip of Kintyre, the coastal venue, with its tight grass track, will welcome visitors from near and far for the event.
The games are a spectators’ delight and once again they will witness fine displays of athletic prowess, piping and dancing tradition, while brilliant duels take place on the track.
With more runners than ever before expected, in addition to the 110, 220 and 440yard sprints and the men’s and women’s mile race, there will be a women’s 110-yard sprint and half-mile race.
For those preferring strength over speed, the heavy competitors will be in the thick of the action, tossing the caber, throwing the hammer and tyre, shot put, high jump and a ladies broom throwing competition.
James McCorkindale’s Highland dancers will give demonstration displays for those interested in more delicate pursuits.
John Galbraith, Southend games secretary, said: ‘Hopefully we can match 2013’s exceptional games when more than 1,000 people came.
‘Running is a premier Campbeltown activity and I hope as many runners as possible – men and women – can compete, helping to support their home games.
‘There will be youth’s races too so any children looking to take part will be more than welcome.
‘The Southend games committee is glad to be back this year, with the new Dunaverty Hall and all its facilities.
‘More than £1,500 in prize money for the athletics events is up for grabs, which is sure to attract the cream of sprint and distance runners.’
The pipers of Kintyre Schools Pipe Band will open the event at 6pm sharp with further piping during the evening.
Be sure not to miss what will be a fun event for all the family.
