Ramblers to amble around new event

-

A NEW festival for Kintyre will see walkers lace up their boots and pound coastal trails.

The Kintyre and Gigha Walking Festival from September 20 to 25 criss-crosses the peninsula.

The Kintyre Way, in partnership with Explore Kintyre and Gigha, has selected 12 walks with two in each area.

An event spokesperson said: ‘The festival’s aim is to cater for all abilities with a mixture of longer more strenuous walks, shorter walks where you can learn more about the history and the heritage of the area, and two accessible walks, meaning that everyone can join in.’

The festival begins on Tuesday September 20 with a walk round Torrisdale Estate followed by a walk from Torrisdale to Saddell.

Wednesday’s hike takes place in Campbeltown, with a morning walk to Davaar Island and a heritage trail walk around the town in the afternoon.

On Thursday the festival moves north with a tour of historic Tarbert Castle and the first of more strenuous walks from Tarbert to Skipness.

Early start

Southend is the starting point on Friday with an early start from Amod to Machrihanish, followed in the afternoon by a historic walk taking in Dunaverty and St Columba.

Largieside features on Saturday with a Tayinloan to Rhunahaorine hike in the morning and Glenbarr to Arnicle in the afternoon.

The last event is on the Isle of Gigha on Sunday, with a walk around Achamore Gardens and a circular walk taking in the Spouting Cave later on.

Each walk has a suggested donation towards organising the event and some of the venues.
