Latest news: opportunity for apprentice reporter

-

HAVE you ever fancied working as a reporter for your local paper?

The Campbeltown

Courier may be about to make your dreams come true.

The Courier is offering a unique and exciting opportunity for a talented and creative person to embark on a specially-tailored apprenticeship in local journalism.

Susan Windram, group editor of the

Courier’s publisher, Wyvex Media, explained the thinking behind the launch of the scheme. She said: ‘The Courier is a brilliant community paper and is going from strength to strength.

‘Unfortunately, due to the relative remoteness of Campbeltown, it can be difficult to recruit fully-trained journalists.

‘As a result, Wyvex has decided to grab the bull by the horns and grow our own reporters.’

The Courier wants to provide employment for a local person – whether they have just left school or are looking to change their career – and give them the chance to stay in the Mull of Kintyre rather than feel they have to move away from the area to secure their dream job.

Demonstrate

Susan added: ‘Initially we will be looking for one, possibly two people who can demonstrate a flair for writing and an in-depth understanding of what is important to the community.

‘In return, Wyvex will pay for a fast-track qualification in journalism, full on-the-job training and support, as well as a varied, challenging and exciting work environment – we will even subsidise driving lessons if the successful candidate can’t already drive.’

The apprenticeship is open to anyone aged over 16 living in the Mull of Kintyre and will involve a fullyfunded four-month residential course leading to an industry recognised qualification in journalism.

Susan concluded: ‘I have been a journalist for more than 25 years and it has given me a wonderful career. We want to open up this fantastic opportunity to Kintyre people and make it easy for them to build a rewarding future in their home town.

‘We think this scheme is a first among Argyll and Bute newspapers and it really is an opportunity not to be missed.’
