Footballers are fired up in feisty friendly

WITH no league or cup action and the prospect of a sunny afternoon Kintyre’s amateur footballers organised a friendly match.

The Pupils had a free weekend and Carradale’s game against Boswell was cancelled on Friday lunchtime leaving plenty of players available.

Toughest

The referee, Peter McCallum, had one of the toughest jobs on the park as his sons Donald and John played on opposing teams. In the good-natured affair he hardly drew his whistle as there was little tackling and plenty of passing.

The Reds took the lead after two minutes through a penalty struck well by Gary Grumoli. Ewan McIlroy left the net and stretched his legs at centre forward. McIlroy doubled the Reds’ lead on the half hour.

It was not to be a walkover though and

Donald McCallum added a Blues’ brace before half time.

The Blues completed their comeback to lead 3-2 in the 68th minute with a strike just outside the box from Ewan Mcmillan.

With 12 minutes to go the Reds equalised through a Stuart MacPhail shot form 22 yards out. A Dean McCallum header completed the scoring for the Blues with four minutes left.

Carradale play Helensburgh at home tomorrow (Saturday) on the 3G and the kick off is scheduled for 2pm. The Pupils are away to Clairmont.
