Dalmally – on Friday October 26 United Auctions held a sale of 1,934 lambs and sheep at Dalmally Auction Mart. All classes of stock met with a keen enquiry with lambs averaging £33.69 (+ £5.45 per head on the year). The entry of lambs consisted mainly of smaller long keeping sorts. Islay – Caledonian Marts Ltd on Friday October 19 sold 187 cattle, and 253 sheep at their annual autumn sale on the Isle of Islay. A feature at the sale was the consignmen­t of 81 calves from Ardtalla Estate where they sold a Charolais bullock which topped the sale at £1,020, purchased by Andrew Dunn, Redhall. Ardtalla’s Charolais bullocks averaged £723 (+£117, OTY) with their heifers averaging £570 (+£30, OTY) The top price heifer at the sale was consigned by M McMIllan, Balliemart­in for a pen of three Limousins at £720. Stirling – Caledonian Marts Ltd on Thursday October 25 sold 163 cattle comprising 88 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls, 65 OTM cattle and 10 calves. A better show of cattle for quality met a similar trade. Prime bullocks averaged 218ppkg. Prime heifers averaged 222ppkg. Beef cows averaged 108ppkg. Dairy cows averaged 85ppkg. Heifers sold to 258p for a Limousin from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn, purchased by Robert Alexander, Butcher, Port Glasgow and to £1,750 from C Smith, South Flanders, Kippen. Bullocks sold to 248p for a Limousin from DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuth­ill, Muthill to Hugh A Black and Sons, Stirling and to £1,642 from C Malone, Pitcairn, Cardenden. Leading prices: Heifers per kg: 252p (Three Times) Brockwoodl­ees and Learielaw; 248p Faskine and Easter Ochtermuth­ill; 245p Borlick, Faskine and Easter Ochtermuth­ill; 242p Strathview (McNicol); 238p Bogleys; 232p Pitcairn and Borlick; 230p Broadleys. Also forward were 65 cast cows and bulls. All classes of cows were dearer on the week, and many more could have been sold. Beef cows averaged 108ppkg selling to 170p on two occasions from W Dandie and Son, Learielaw, Broxburn and A Galbraith, Upper Kinneil, Linlithgow and to £1,320 gross from Learielaw. With a larger show of dairy cows forward again, all classes sharper compared to last week, averaging 85p selling to 104p from W and M Wyllie, Broompark, Torphichen and to £760 twice from J Brown and Son, East Gartmillan, Airdrie, and Broompark, Torphichen. Other leading prices: Beef cows per head: £1,300 Upper Kinneil; £1,120 Highflat; £1,080 Kirkton; £1,050 North Moorhouse Cottage; £1,000 and £980 Highflat. Beef cows per kg: 150p Upper Kinneil; 148p East Kerse and North Moorhouse Cottage; 135p Pitlessie Mill; 134p Kirkton. Dairy cows per head: £730 Meldrum; £720 and £710 Solsgirth; £700 Broompark. Dairy cows per kg: 103p East Gartmillan; 100p Meldrum and Solsgirth; 98p and 97p Solsgirth. Clean cattle and cast cows required on a weekly basis.
