Flood chaos hits town

Campbeltown Courier - - NEWS -

Severe flooding put a dampener on the start of 1994 for many areas in Campbeltown. Several areas lay under water as torrential rain combined with high tides, stranding people in their homes and closing roads in Saddell Street and Longrow. Shopkeepers were preparing to barricade their shop-fronts with sandbags. Residents at Ralston Road were particularly badly affected as the rain exacerbated a longterm problem of flooding behind their homes. Many of the gardens were flooded back and front, and at 157 Ralston Road, where Mrs Roselle Nelson has lived for 33 years, water, which had poured down the hill behind the houses, coursed round the side of her house to join the small river running down the street. Mrs Nelson had been expecting people for lunch on Monday but had to cancel as they were unable to reach her front door. ‘We’ve always had a problem with flooding,’ she said, ‘but lately it has become much worse.’
