Cool conditions suited super sand sloggers
The runners string out along the beach as some brightness lights the far horizon.
An overcast but bright Boxing Day proved ideal for the 47 athletes working off their Christmas excess on Westport beach. Young South Kintyre Harriers Handicap Champion Niamh Quinn crossed the Slog in the Sand line first. Niamh had competed in the 5km race while full distance runners battered 10km across the beach. In the men’s race Garry Muir, 37.05, returned to winning form having lost his crown in 2017 to Stuart McGeachy. Muir was more than two minutes ahead of second placed Alex Souden, 40.26. He was followed by third placed Gary Turner in 41.05. In the ladies’ race, winner Jennifer Reid, 43.33, was nearly five minutes faster than runner-up Susan Turner, 48.24 and Elaine Cameron, 51.02, in third, slipped a bit behind her 50-minute time from 2017. For further Slog in the Sand pictures and the full results see inside pages 30 and 31.
