Cellist hopes to strike a chord in Campbeltown
An Azerbaijani cellist will join a Welsh pianist to perform on a Campbeltown stage. Jamal Aliyev, who has played cello across the globe, and Jâms Coleman will perform works by Beethoven, Bloch and Frank Bridge at the Kintyre Music Club concert in the Lorne and Lowland Hall at 7.30pm on January 14 – not the usual Friday. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Jamal studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at the Royal College of Music with Thomas Carroll, where he is completing his master’s degree. His highlights include performing at the Menuhin, Kronberg and Enescu Festivals, the Atheneum (Bucharest), Forbidden City Concert Hall (Beijing), Rachmaninov Hall (Moscow), the Arts Parliament House (Singapore) and the Presidential Concert Hall (Turkey). In 2015 he was selected as one of the first BBC Introducing classical artists, regularly appearing on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and with the BBC Concert Orchestra. In 2017 Jamal made his debut at the BBC Proms and won the Arts Club – Sir Karl Jenkins Music Award. In the last year, he has performed as a soloist with the London Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, and with the Symphony Orchestra Simón Bolívar of Venezuela. Joining him on stage, pianist Jâms hails from Anglesey, North Wales. Jâms enjoys a rich and varied musical life performing as a soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist. He finds it inspiring and fascinating to collaborate with different musicians and values the rewards of this process. Chamber music engagements include performances in the UK and across Europe with instrumentalists Luke Hsu, Clio Gould, Maggie Faultless, Timothy Ridout, Laura van der Heijden, Joy Lisney, Marcin Zdunik and Jamal. He has performed live on BBC Radio 3, BBC World Service, BBC 2’s Proms Extra, BBC Radio Cymru and S4C. As a vocal accompanist, he enjoys collaborating with many singers and his engagements include recitals with Ailish Tynan, James Gilchrist, Sir John Tomlinson, Robert Murray, Nicholas Mulroy, Robert Murray and Andrew Kennedy. Tickets for the concert, which is free for Kintyre Music Club members, students and children, are £10.
