Scotland + Venice commission comes to Campbeltown
Campbeltown Picture House (CPH) is one of seven Scottish cinemas which will screen Charlotte Prodger’s SaF05 at the same time as it is being presented to audiences in Venice.
Having attracted nearly 6,400 visitors from across the globe during its world premiere at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia – the new single-channel video installation, commissioned and promoted by Scotland + Venice, will screen at cinemas in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Helensburgh, Isle of Lewis, Shetland and Skye, as well as Campbeltown, while it is being shown in the Italian city.
The artist’s most ambitious work to date, SaF05 is the last in a trilogy of videos that began with Stoneymollan Trail followed by BRIDGIT. SaF05 is named after a maned lioness that figures in the work as a cipher for queer attachment and desire.
Each screening will include a short trailer documenting the project development made by Martin Clark and will be followed by a talk with members of the Scotland + Venice team, invited guests and the professional development programme team which has been involved in the development and presentation of the work.
Having received its UK premier at The Tower in Helensburgh then screening at Glasgow Film Theatre the film will be shown at CPH at 6.30pm on Thursday, July 25.
SaF05 was curated by Linsey Young in partnership with Cove Park, Argyll and Bute, where Prodger developed her first ideas for the Scotland + Venice commission.
Alexia Holt, associate director of Cove Park, said: ‘The Scottish Tour is a wonderful opportunity for audiences here in Scotland to see this major new work by Charlotte Prodger and we look forward to working with all our partners on this programme as the work tours Scotland’s west coast, Highlands and Islands between June and November 2019.’
Amanda Catto, chairwoman of the Scotland + Venice partnership, and head of Visual Arts at Creative Scotland, said: ‘Scotland + Venice is delighted to be presenting Prodger’s new film to communities across Scotland, with additional funding support from Screen Scotland, Art Fund and Outset Scotland. People who come to the tour will be able to enjoy the film at the same time that it is being premiered in Venice, creating a significant opportunity to reach out to new audiences here.’
CPH manager Ellen Mainwood said: ‘We are delighted to be among the UK venues screening this powerful work. We’re always looking for challenging and quality films to bring to our audiences so Charlotte Prodger’s commission was a perfect fit.
‘We’re particularly looking forward to the discussion surrounding the screening and are grateful for Cove Park for bringing the project to Campbeltown.’
