The winner of Machrihanish Golf Club’s Rotary Open was Campbeltown’s very own lefty, James Armour.

The June 22 competition was played in the Stableford format and 80 took part on a breezy day. James amassed an excellent 38 points in victory with highlights being four point birdies at the 5th and 12th.

A disappointing triple bogey eight at the par-five 10th hole did not deter the young man, who is having another good season on the links.

Runner-up by a single point was visitor Robert Jordan. Local firefighter Jamie Graham was pipped into third by virtue of a poorer inward six to Robert but had a great four-point birdie at the 12th.

There were 20 competitors in the club’s ladies’ Rotary Open, which was won by Elizabeth Casey with a fabulous score of 36 points.

A terrific early birdie-three at the par-four third put her in the hunt and she followed with excellent pars at the sixth and seventh to go out in 20 points. She consolidated her round with a solid back nine including an excellent par-four at the 17th for three points on her way to victory.

Visiting golfer Alison Evans was second with 34 but she also enjoyed a terrific front nine amassing 20 points including a great run of pars from the fifth to the eighth scoring three points on each hole.

A good back nine of 14 points gave her second prize.

Elinor Blair was third with a solid round of 33 points scoring 17 points on the way out and 16 coming home.

Former caddie master Calum McLean won the seniors’ category with an excellent 31 points scoring three points at the last to hammer home his advantage over the rest of the field.

Top junior was Murdo MacLean, who had an excellent par-four on the 14th hole, the toughest on the course.
