Tarbert’s young engineers in pole position
A group of dedicated young engineers from Tarbert Academy has seen off fierce competition to be named Highlands and Islands Young Engineers and Science Club of the Year.
Josh Barker, Christopher Johnstone, Calum MacDonald, Luke Scott and Jake Sim, along with their teacher and club leader, Sheena Telford, collected their award in front of 350 guests from the Scottish Council for Development and Industry’s Highlands and Islands Annual Dinner and Business Excellence Awards.
And today, Friday, will see the team leave for the UK final of the Shell Greenpower competition in Goodwood where they will race their carefully constructed battery-powered car.
The young engineers collected more than £2,000 in sponsorship from local businesses and fundraising events to buy the kit before working tirelessly to build the car, meeting every day at intervals, lunchtimes and after school.
Tutor Sheena said: ‘I am very proud of the boys and it is good that their hard work has been recognised. They spend all their spare time working on their projects.
‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has sponsored us or supported the project in some way, especially
Duncan MacDonald, who transports us all to the competitions.’
The boys are hoping that this weekend they will secure a top three position but are happy to be competing in the competition.
