Thought for the Week

The Bible tells us we have a God who speaks and is full of accounts of those to whom He spoke, such as the boy Samuel during the night watches, or to the Apostle Paul in the midst of a terrible storm at sea.

Hebrews 1 v 1 affirms that in one sense, He has said all He wants to say through His son who came to our world to tell us how to have the best of this life and be assured of life in the world to come. However, He still speaks today. There are some who will witness to the fact He speaks out loud to them and others who catch directions in the circumstances of everyday life, how doors open and close, through the advice of good friends and by the reaction of conscience to intentions.

Those who read the Bible regularly and systematically, as opposed to opening it at random and sticking in a pin, are often amazed at how the passage for the day addresses the problems and circumstances of that day and draw from that what they believe God is telling them.

In I Kings chapter 19, we read of the Prophet Elijah feeling overwhelmed by the attacks of his enemies and the declaration of Queen Jezebel of a hunt to kill him.

In the midst of his trauma, the word of the Lord comes to him, not in a great wind nor in an earthquake nor in a fire but in a low whisper.

With all that has been going on around us over the past year we, too, may be feeling overwhelmed.

If we listen, we may hear God reminding us that He is always with us.

He is only a whisper away and in that whisper is contained all His power and love. Springbank Evangelical Church,
