Thought for the Week

-

As a ‘DIYer’, I like to learn new skills. Books and YouTube help, but most of my learning has come through conversations, learning from the experience of others and learning by mistakes.

I remember my first attempts at bricklaying. I was concentrating on ensuring the bricks were laid horizontally. I did not think to check the vertical plane.

I may have had a newly purchased spirit level but only referring to one bubble and not the other two was a time costly mistake. Perhaps I should have used a plumbline.

A plumbline was a key tool for all the grand historic buildings we see around the world. A weight on a string with the aid of gravity.

Have you ever thought about the internal plumbline that humans have?

Natural law is experienced in some way by all humans.

Think about it this way: someone who seemingly has no conscience about stealing, feels and knows a great injustice done to them if someone steals from them. Where does truth and justice come from?

In a world awash with relativism where it is taught that there are no absolutes apart from what society and culture dictates, natural law is a God-given plumbline.

The question is, am I willing to listen to that inner voice? The prophet Isaiah spoke about the coming to earth of the Christ as being like a plumbline and a corner stone.

Just as my DIY attempts are better for following a standard datum point, I determined years ago to build my life on the rock that is the message of Christ.

When I’m getting off course, He’s the reference point to get me back on track. Reverend Chris Holden, The

Fishermen’s Mission.
