Time trial cyclists hit the track at MACC

-

Members of Kintyre Wheelers Cycling Club (KWCC) hit the track at Machrihanish Airport Community Company (MACC) Business Park after a 15-month break from events.

Twelve riders from Kintyre and Mid Argyll lined up to take part in a 10-mile time trial in sunny conditions on Sunday May 30.

A 12 mile per hour southsouth-east wind provided a welcome tailwind for half a lap and a steady headwind for the other.

Riders set off one at a time, with 30-second intervals, on a marked course with the slower riders first and the quicker riders later.

The skill for the quicker riders is to pace themselves for the three laps.

Club chairman Robbie Semple, who recorded the fastest time, said: ‘It is great for the club to get back out to MACC as it offers a good surface with little traffic.

‘Not all of our riders are here to race hard but simply to enjoy the safe environment created by the sanctioned event.’

The cycling time trials at MACC are in their third year and are run by the club during the summer while mountain biking events and road cycles are held throughout the year. ‘We cater for cyclists of all ages and abilities and tend to focus on off-road events such as those at MACC or local mountain bike trails,’ Robbie added.

He thanked Iain McGougan for time-keeping and MACC Business Park for hosting the event, adding that cycling at MACC is not permitted outside sanctioned events.
