‘Oversight’ leads to roadworks rubbish being left

Argyll and Bute Council has said an ‘oversight’ led to roadworks rubble being left on the verge in Tayinloan for more than a year.

A village resident contacted the Courier in frustration after several large blocks of concrete were not removed following road resurfacing and pavement improvements last year.

This was despite contacting the council to voice her concerns that the situation could be dangerous as the undergrowth began to partially cover the rubble at a narrow stretch of road where pedestrians often step on to the verge to allow vehicles to pass.

A council spokesperson said: ‘Work was done at Tayinloan pre-Covid lockdown before our team was diverted to dealing with other vital frontline services.

‘Leaving materials for this long was an oversight for which we apologise.

‘Now this has been highlighted, we will remove the materials.’

Residents on Gigha have also spoken out about a mangled cattle grid which has been left at the roadside for several weeks following its removal from the single-track road.

The council spokesperson added: ‘We removed the cattle grid [from the road] on Gigha and left it in the best place to allow safe foot passage via the passing place on the opposite side of the road. We have already planned to remove it as soon as we have the resources available and we expect this to be in the next week.’
