Island primary schools set for million pound makeovers
Two island primary schools are to undergo refurbishments worth a combined £1,750,000.
The contracts for the works at Salen and Port Charlotte primary schools have been awarded to two Argyll and Bute companies.
TSL Contractors Ltd will carry out the £1.3 million project at Salen Primary School on
Mull, while MacLeod Construction Ltd will be undertaking the £450,000 project at Islay’s Port Charlotte Primary School.
The work is being carried out as part of Argyll and Bute Council’s commitment to deliver 1,140 hours each year of early learning and childcare and will see extensions added to both schools as well as internal improvements to the existing school buildings.
‘We are putting a massive investment into our school estate to ensure our children and young people have a first class learning environment,’ said Councillor Yvonne McNeilly, the council’s policy lead for education. ‘I’m delighted that the contracts have been awarded to two well-known companies and I look forward to seeing the projects come alive over the next few months.’
Councillor Alasdair Redman, policy lead for commercial services, added: ‘Not only will the refurbishments benefit pupils who already attend these schools, they will enable people to see the great teaching and learning opportunities we have in the area and hopefully encourage more families to move to Argyll and Bute.
‘It’s also great that two Argyll businesses have been awarded the contracts for the work, helping to support them and their staff, and build up the economy.’
