The Rockfield Centre

Oban Communities Trust was established on August 1, 2014 following a large community campaign to purchase and save the former Rockfield Primary School building. The local community identified a desire to establish a cultural hub within The Rockfield Centre accommodating four themes extracted during a community consultation.

Following a fairly short journey from gaining ownership in May 2015, the trust sourced funding to complete the capital works (£2.9 million). A small staff team and community volunteers supported the journey, enabling progression of cultural activity on the site by “doing things differently”, trying and testing and utilising the huts and outdoor areas while the works on the main building progressed. Staff were able to move into the offices in the spring of 2021, with the doors opening to the public in the summer of 2021. The Rockfield Centre’s wellbeing programme delivers a range of events and activities designed to enhance the creative wellness of participants.
