SPOTLIGHT ON SCAMS WITH PC LAURA EVANS

-

Several reports of a new scam text message related to Covid testing have been received, writes PC Laura Evans of Police Scotland's Argyll and West Dunbartonshire community engagement team.

The message says you have come into contact with someone who has tested positive for the Omicron variant and asks you to click on a link to order a test kit.

If you click on the link, it takes you to a website with NHS branding where the person is asked to enter their card details to pay £1 postage.

A similar text scam says you need to apply for a Covid passport and the message includes a link that appears to be from the NHS.

NHS Scotland does not charge for Covid tests and will never ask for payment or bank details.

The NHS will not say you have a limited time frame in which to apply for a Covid passport or take a Covid test.

What should you do if you receive a scam email, text or call?

Report a scam email – forward suspicious emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.

Report a scam text – forward suspicious text messages for free by forwarding it to 7726.

Report a scam phone call – report to Police Scotland by telephoning 101 and, if you have lost money, contact your bank.
