Bolgam Street toilets continue to cause a stink

-

The ‘disgraceful’ condition of Campbeltown’s main public toilets is continuing to cause a stink in the community.

Councillor Donald Kelly has written to Argyll and Bute Council’s head of service requesting a ‘much-needed’ upgrade of the ‘antiquated and dilapidated’ facilities in Bolgam Street.

He also planned to ask all councillors on the Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands area committee, which met on Wednesday, to support his request.

Councillor Kelly believes the authority has allowed the facility to deteriorate by failing to carry out essential repairs.

‘Despite numerous complaints about the condition of Bolgam Street toilets, only the bare minimum of repairs have been carried out,’ he said.

‘The local toilet attendant does his level best to work with what can only be described as inferior facilities.

‘This is Campbeltown’s main public toilet and it has now got to the stage where decisive action is required to address this issue.’

An Argyll and Bute Council spokesperson said: ‘Our contractors have carried out repairs to the public toilets.

‘Sadly the toilets have suffered from continued vandalism.

‘We are reviewing how best to upgrade the toilets.’

Councillor Kelly has also revealed that he and fellow Argyll First councillor Dougie Philand intend to put forward a motion to the next full council meeting in April, requesting a change in the frequency of area committee meetings from quarterly to every two months.

They are doing so in a bid to bring greater ‘continuity, democracy and accountability’ to the council at a local level.

‘Area committees are the vital link which enable local councillors to have the opportunity to discuss issues which affect our local areas,’ said Councillor Kelly.

‘If we can increase the frequency of these meetings, it will provide a platform for greater scrutiny and continuity of all issues raised.

‘It will also provide greater accountability regarding responses received from council officers.’
