Campbeltown flies flag for Ukraine

-

Ukraine’s flag flew at the head of Campbeltown’s Old Quay this week, in an apparent show of solidarity with the war-torn country.

The banner, bearing two equally-sized horizontal bands of blue and yellow, replaced the national flag of Scotland which is usually on display.

Used since 1848, Ukraine’s blue and yellow bicolour flag was officially adopted as a state flag for the first time in 1918 by the short-lived West Ukrainian People’s Republic, later used by the Ukrainian People’s Republic.

When Ukraine became part of the Soviet Union, the blue and yellow bicolour flag was outlawed, replaced by the flag of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Following Ukraine’s independence in 1991, the blue and yellow flag was used for official ceremonies, before it was officially restored on January 28, 1992.

The bicolour is said to represent a blue sky over a yellow wheat field, in reference to Ukraine’s position as the fifth largest exporter of wheat in the world - the breadbasket of Europe.
