-

Ten candidates are chasing the six seats up for grabs on Argyll and Bute Council for the two wards of South Kintyre and Kintyre and the Islands in the Thursday May 5 election.

All 36 seats on the council are up for election.

In South Kintyre, the three seats will be contested by John Armour, SNP; Rory Colville, Scottish Liberal Democrats; Donald Kelly, Independent; and Tommy MacPherson, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party. In the Kintyre and the Islands ward, six people have thrown their hats into the ring for the three seats: Robin Currie, Scottish Liberal Democrats; Jane Kelly, Scottish Labour; John McAlpine, Independent; Dougie McFadzean, SNP; Alec McNeilly, Scottish Conservative and Unionist; and Alastair Redman, Independent.

With the date for nomination papers and the appointment of election agents now past, the first issue of poll cards has taken place; the second took place yesterday (Thursday).

Postal vote papers will be issued on April 15, 19 and 26.

Tuesday April 19 is the last date to apply for a new postal vote, to change a postal vote to a proxy vote or vice-versa. It is also the last date to have a postal ballot paper sent to a different address or to cancel a postal or proxy vote. The last day for a new application to vote by proxy – not postal proxy – is Tuesday April 26. The opening of postal votes will begin on April 19. Unlike the Westminster elections, the verification and count will take place on Friday May 6, the day after polling.
