New trophy in honour of Dunaverty legends

-

The inaugural playing of the Robertson/MacVicar mixed pairs competition took place at Dunaverty Golf Club last Sunday, with 20 pairs vying for the honour of being the first names on the new trophy.

This event was created in recognition of two legends of Dunaverty – Belle Robertson MBE and the late Jock MacVicar – who have both championed the club far and wide during their glittering careers, Belle as one of Scotland’s greatest amateur golfers and Jock as one of the most renowned names in Scottish golf journalism.

Forty players took to the links which, as usual, had been prepared beautifully by greenkeepers Jonathan Barbour and Campbell MacBrayne.

A decent day, weather-wise, helped to create a fantastic energy from the off, leading to a great day’s golf but, more importantly, an atmosphere that is renowned at Dunaverty, with every single player coming off the 18th green with a smile on their face.

On the day, the clubhouse was buzzing and the presentation saw Derek Graham and Katharine Hardman emerge as winners and take the trophy, which was presented by Belle and lady captain Mary Wilson.

‘Thanks to all who played and made it such a special day for the club and to Rona Burton in The Tea Box for looking after everyone,’ said a club spokesperson.

Result: 1 Katharine Hardman and Derek Graham, 2 Katie

Cappello and Robert Irvine, 3 Linda Arkell and Ricky Tonner.

The day before, Dunaverty gents participated in the annual Amod/MacNeill pairs competition.

A competitive day played in a Texas Scramble format was blessed with some decent weather, despite the very pessimistic forecasts.

John Marrison and Malcolm Ronald emerged from the pack with a tremendous score of nett 58 to take the magnificent trophy.

‘Thanks to greenkeepers Jonathan and Campbell, as always, for a course which was immaculate and improving every week, and to Rona at The Tea Box for looking after everyone,’ said the club spokesperson.

Result: 1 John Marrison and Malcolm Ronald 61-3.0=58.0, 2 Robert Irvine and Stuart McLachlan 65-2.7=62.3, 3 Derek Graham and David McGeachy 67-2.0=65.0, 4 Don Hardman and Neil Brodie 681.9=65.1, 5 Sandy Watson and James Finlay 69-2.9=66.1, 6 Hamish Kelly and John Brown 70-2.7=67.3.
