GDYFL - Under 14s Div 2

Sunday’s match against Campsie Minerva 2009s in the Glasgow and District Youth Football League’s under 14s second division was always going to be tough for the young Campbeltown Pupils 2009s and it proved to be the case against a good visiting team.

The first 20 minutes were a very even affair, with the Pupils competing well, and causing issues for the Campsie defence with the pace of Ryan Johnston and Rio Arkell.

However, midway through the half it was Campsie’s standout central midfielder who turned the encounter Campsie’s way, with a 10-minute hat-trick, the first an unchallenged header from a corner, followed by a spectacular 35-yard strike in the top corner, and then the hattrick rounded off with a calm finish after some poor Pupils defending.

A Campsie fourth goal with the last kick of the first half left the locals coming off shellshocked after being in the game for a long period of time.

The second half again saw the Pupils start well, and they were rewarded when Johnston cracked home a brilliant 30yard free kick off the underside of the bar and into the net to reduce the deficit.

A second goal could have put the locals back into the fixture, however, as the half wore on, Campsie began to dominate possession, and after being aided by some poor defending and loss of discipline in key areas, were able to add three further goals to the score line.

The Pupils almost grabbed a second goal through Arkell’s perseverance up front, but it wasn’t to be.

This Sunday, the Pupils are away to league title challengers Finnart in what will be another tough fixture.
