Kintyre swimmers excel in Mini League

-

A squad of 18 swimmers from Kintyre Amateur Swimming Club recently travelled to Bellshill to compete in round one of the Clyde Coast Mini League against Rutherglen and Dumfries.

They started well in the medley relays in the pool at the Sir Matt Busby Sports Centre, with a win for the 10-year-old girls despite fierce competition; at that early stage in the afternoon’s contest, it was clear that Dumfries had a strong team.

In the individual events, Sophie Millar won the 10-year-old girls’ 50m butterfly, adding five points to Kintyre’s total. This was followed by wins from Caoimhe Quinn in the 25m freestyle, Isiah Doxsey in the 50m butterfly and Niamh McSporran in the 50m backstroke.

In his first club competition, Jack Barr swam an excellent 50m backstroke to win five points for Kintyre in the 10-year-old boys’ event. In the 10-year-old breaststroke events, there was a double win for Kintyre with Sophie Millar and Robert Reid finishing in first place. Further wins for Isiah Doxsey – 50m backstroke – and Niamh McSporran – 50m freestyle – took Kintyre’s points total to 114, only five ahead of Rutherglen, going into the freestyle relays.

The Kintyre 10-year-old girls took first place in the 4x50m freestyle relay and the afternoon’s events finished with an exciting squadron relay.

The final points saw Kintyre finish in second place overall with 136 points, 14 ahead of the host club Rutherglen on 122 points. A strong Dumfries team finished on top with 184 points.

Kintyre swimmers are looking forward to the round two tie against South Ayrshire and REN 96 “B” Team on Sunday. The competition had to be switched from Aqualibrium to the Riverside in Dunoon as Campbeltown’s pool is currently closed for maintenance.
