Military memorabilia on show for Shopper-Aide
The founder of Shopper-Aide is holding an exhibition of family military memorabilia to boost the Kintyre charity’s coffers.
Susan Paterson, a director of the charity which supports older citizens by providing grocery shopping, befriending services, household support and much more, will be sharing documents including maps, letters and photographs relating to various family members and their involvement in both the First and Second World Wars.
She will also be revealing some information about her three-times-great-grandfather William Ross, who was in the Argyll Militia in the early 1800s.
He was based in Campbeltown by 1815 and was buried at Kilkerran Cemetery in 1843.
“The reason for this event started with my interest in my family tree and in finding information left by family members, which has grown into, at times, a surprising result,” said Susan.
“I have also been in contact with The Highlanders’ Museum at Fort George about donating many of my father’s maps and documents.”
She added: “In looking through letters to my grandmother, I discovered that my mother’s brother had been one of the few to escape from Crete when the Germans invaded.
“There is also my father’s reports on the crossing of the Irrawaddy in Burma and letters from family members of those who never made it across.”
People are invited to go along to the exhibition at Dunaverty Hall in Southend on Wednesday May 31 between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
Entry to see all this, and learn about how these wars included both those fighting and their families back home, is by donation.
