Campervanners of the month

My wife, Bec, and I have just got back from our first campervan jaunt in a year and it was a triumph!

It was the first time we have used our new awning, which we’ve had for 14 months, but we missed the short window of opportunity between lockdowns to use it last summer. It was also our first foray into the joys of solar power, with our new solar panel and portable battery unit freeing us from the cost and limitations of powered pitches.

We took our new gear for an outing to Pershore in Worcestershire and, when putting it up for the very first time, its inflatable supports meant the traditional ’awning erecting squabbles’ were unusually lacking. We didn’t get to test its weatherproof qualities, as we were blessed with glorious sunshine of the kind that turns pearly white limbs bright red and calls for the immediate application of aloe vera.

And there was no huddling around a fading light in the awning or rationing light in the camper in order to save power and the inevitability of a flat battery the next day.

Our phones were fully charged and the ’van started beautifully every day we left the confines of the campsite, with a delightful, dirty stutter that only a 12-year-old diesel engine can produce.

Running through our campsite was the River Avon and, parked alongside it, we enjoyed a fabulous view, including geese and swans.

One swan in particular that came ashore to hiss at a dog on the next-door pitch, preen its feathers and look for food, caused me to lock myself in our awning (by zipping it up) as it seemed to have no fear of people, but a very large beak and massive wings. No broken arms for me! But it happily wandered off in search of a friendly camper who hand-fed it bits of bread.

Note, the giant swan photo here was taken from the safety of the awning, through the plastic window. All in all, a really awesome trip!
