After buying your campervan, outdoor furniture is likely to be the next thing you’ll invest in. Visit any outdoor show or shop and you’ll be struck by how much choice is available. But beware: even though it’s tempting to buy the full range, remember that you need space to store it all – both in transit, and at home if your campervan is used as a daily driver.

When choosing essential items of camping furniture, pack size is one of the most important factors to consider, so start by making a list of the things you really need. That starts with camping chairs. You’re likely to while away many hours sitting in your chairs, so make sure they are comfortable. Cheap and cheerful may seem like a good idea when you’re in the shop considering price tags but it’s worth spending the extra on good-quality chairs in the long run. There are two types of camping chairs. Tripod chairs and those which fold in half like a book. Tripod chairs usually come with a carry bag, so are handy for taking down the beach, etc, and typically take up less storage space.

Folding chairs are often bigger and more comfortable, with features like a reclining back and adjustable headrest, but be mindful of the size and weight of them. Inflatable furniture is another option to consider, especially if you have an awning that doubles as a bedroom. Inflatable armchairs and settees that convert to camp beds are widely available, but beware that they can sometimes be on the bulky side, and don’t forget to pack a compatible pump!

The next piece of furniture you will need is a table, especially if your campervan doesn't have one. These are also available in many shapes and sizes, so it’s important to consider how you’re going to use it. For most campervanners, a camping table is used for eating meals and playing games, so make sure the table is big enough to accommodate the number of diners in your camp. If buying chairs at the same time, make sure these are at the right height – especially if you have children.

For a really versatile set-up, opt for a picnic table. These typically seat four and come with a pair of benches or individual stools. The table folds like a suitcase and the chairs fit inside, so it takes up minimum storage space in the campervan.

The weather can be very changeable when camping in the great outdoors, so consider what protection you might need from the sun, rain and wind. Many campervanners are happy to sit inside when it’s cold outside, so only shade is needed. This can sometimes be achieved by simply parking your campervan at a different angle in order to block the sun, or you may have a roll-out cassette awning already fitted to the side of your campervan. If not, a canopy or tarp that can be attached to the ’van and pegged to the ground is a simple, lightweight solution. Some canopies are also available with removable side panels, which will provide shelter from rain and wind, so these are ideal if you’re looking for a compact alternative to a full awning. If you spend a lot of time at the campsite, frequently have barbecues and also enjoy days on the beach, a windbreak will also come in very handy.
