Water shortage hits Caldon and Ribble Link
The Caldon Canal at Hazelhurst Locks (pictured) and the Ribble Link have been added to a list of water supply related closures of waterways following the hot dry weather of early summer – but the Canal & River Trust’s head of hydrology has told Canal Boat that CRT doesn’t anticipate there being any more full closures.
Canals already shut include long sections of all three trans-Pennine canals, while restrictions on opening hours have affected the Trent & Mersey, Oxford, Grand Union, Regents and Hertford Union canals – and locks on the River Weaver are only being operated at set times of day. However CRT’s Adam Comerford, interviewed by
Canal Boat, said that while restrictions were likely to be in place into the autumn he felt that the rest of the system would last out until usage decreased following the end of the busy holiday period.
See our news feature on pages 12-13 for details of current closures, CRT’s prognosis for the future, and water supply plans for the longer term.
