Dredg­ing de­layed

The hot dry weather which has led to some canals run­ning short of wa­ter has also had an ef­fect on dredg­ing work on the Grand Union. As a re­sult of the ef­fect of dredg­ing on the al­ready low oxy­gen lev­els re­sult­ing from the heat, work in Mil­ton Keynes has been sus­pended un­til win­ter to re­duce the like­li­hood of fish deaths

Liver­pool gains from clo­sure

Vol­un­teers took ad­van­tage of the drain­ing of the Liver­pool end of the Leeds & Liver­pool for re­place­ment of a col­lapsed cul­vert to carry out a ma­jor clean-up on the empty canal. Lo­cal res­i­dents, reg­u­lar vol­un­teers and CRT staff re­moved sev­eral skip loads of items from the Mel ling and Boot le ar­eas, in­clud­ing a bath­room suite and a mo­tor­cy­cle

A vol­un­teer team took ad­van­tage of the wa­ter short­age clo­sure to paint, oil and tidy up the Wi­gan Locks, work­ing through the 21-lock flight at one lock per day

A group of Canal & River Trust vol­un­teers have in­stalled a free book ex­change by the Grand Union Canal in Brent­ford. Si­t­u­ated by Brent­ford Gaug­ing Locks, it was sup­plied by lo­cal MSO Marine boat yard
