How Luke Guilford and his 60-footer Tansy are meeting vinyl demand
Luke Guilford of floating record shop The Record Deck answers the questions
People are wonderfully eclectic in their tastes
How long have you been a liveaboard?
What is your current boat?
My 60ft narrowboat Tansy
How many boats have you owned?
What led you to canals?
My family had a little river cruiser on the Nene.
Do you have a favourite part of the country from the water?
The Lea & Stort, Thames, Kennet and Avon, but everywhere has its moments.
What do you think the network needs? Protection... the Kennet and Avon, for example, needs more maintenance and more love.
Are you a continuous cruiser?
Yes, it suits a roving trader.
What was the inspiration for your business?
I saw other trade boats at Cropredy Folk festival one year and that really got me thinking.
How long have you been trading?
More than six years.
Where do you trade?
At canal events and floating markets or popping up solo... In London, Berkhamsted, Rickmansworth, up towards Birmingham, the Oxford canal and the Kennet and Avon (which is where we’ll be this Autumn).
How do you attract the punters?
The events are usually busy, but without them social media has been the way. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, follow us at @therecorddeckuk
Any trends among the discs?
Not really, people are wonderfully eclectic with their tastes.
Ever come across a rarity?
Yes plenty, it’s usually something folky or proggy, in the circles I keep anyway. Dr Strangely Strange?
Any plans for expansion?
No, I’m happy with how it works, easily managed.
What has been your biggest task?
Keeping the stock, dry and/or out of the sun!
What was the first single you bought?
Love to say something cool, but I’m pretty sure it was The Frog Chorus .
How has Covid-19 hit you?
The cancelled events of 2020 have been greatly missed, from a trading perspective and for the vibes and social aspects too.
Have you ever fallen in?
Fully submerged... five times at least.
What did you want to be aged 12?
Probably a Beatle.
What would your superpower be?
The power to cease a headwind.
